What is the meaning of lock and key?

The lock icon means that the user has protected tweets and their tweets are only made visible to users that they have “approved” to follow them. When coming across a user that has a locked icon, you can request to follow them, but the user has the choice of approving or denying your request.

The only way to do it is to make your Twitter account private and it will be visible only for you or the people you follow. This feature called “Protected Tweets” and also hide your Tweets to justpeople you follow. There is no option to hide just your following list.

How to protect your Tweets
