What is the net positive suction head?

Net Positive Suction Head or NPSH for pumps can be defined as the difference between liquid pressure at pump suction and liquid vapor pressure, expressed in terms of height of liquid column. Suction head is the term used to describe liquid pressure at pump suction in terms of height of liquid column.

Static Height is the maximum height reached by the pipe after the pump (also known as the ‘discharge head’). Static Lift is the height the water will rise before arriving at the pump (also known as the suction head). Friction Loss (or Head Loss). This equation can be derived from Bernoulli’s Equation.

Because a perfect vacuum is never achieved and because some lift is lost to friction in the suction line, the maximum actual suction lift for a positive-displacement pump is approximately 22 ft. The maximum actual suction lift for a centrifugal pump is approximately 15 ft when pumping water from an open air tank.

Net Positive Suction Head, NPSH, is defined as the total fluid head at the inlet of a pump. PREDICTION: The Simerics Cavitation Module can be used effectively to determine NPSHr by running a series off virtual tests for the system of interest and determining when the performance exhibits a 3% head loss.

Try the following:

Reduce motor speed (RPMs).

Install an impeller inducer.

Incorporate a booster pump into your pump system.

If possible, reduce the temperature of your pump, liquid, and/or other components.

Increase liquid level around the suction area.

How to Increase the NPSH Margin to a Pump

Increase the liquid level in the suction vessel.

Eliminate any flow restrictions in the suction piping (such as a strainer)

Operate at a flow rate less than the pump bep (see figure 3).

Install an Inducer, if available.

Change to a low NPSHR impeller, if available.

Simply defined, cavitation is the formation of bubbles or cavities in liquid, developed in areas of relatively low pressure around an impeller. The imploding or collapsing of these bubbles trigger intense shockwaves inside the pump, causing significant damage to the impeller and/or the pump housing.

Manometric Head. This is defined by British Standards as the sum of the actual lift + the friction losses in the pipes + the discharge velocity head. Commonly the suction and delivery pipes are of equal diameter.

Total Dynamic Head in an industrial pumping system is the total amount of pressure when water is flowing in a system. It is comprised of two parts: the vertical rise and friction loss. To calculate Total Dynamic Head, also known as TDH, we need to calculate two things: A) The Vertical Rise.

The dynamic total delivery head is also referred to as the “delivery head” or simply as the “total delivery head”. In the technical literature, the total delivery head is defined as the work that needs to be performed by the pump to pump the medium with reference to a defined unit of weight.

Suction lift refers to the pressure (negative pressure) on the suction side of the pump. The pressure can be measured from the centre line of the hydraulic part of the pump down to the water surface on the suction side of the pump.

Pump curves are essentially data about a given pump’s ability to produce flow against certain head. When you’re reading a curve, the pump’s flow rate will be on the top and bottom and its height to push is on the sides.

Head is expressed in units of height such as meters or feet. The static head of a pump is the maximum height (pressure) it can deliver. The capability of the pump at a certain RPM can be read from its Q-H curve (flow vs. height). Its pressure head correspondent is the dynamic pressure.

Vapor pressure or equilibrium vapor pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by a vapor in thermodynamic equilibrium with its condensed phases (solid or liquid) at a given temperature in a closed system. The equilibrium vapor pressure is an indication of a liquid’s evaporation rate.

The static head, sometimes referred to as the pressure head, is a term primarily used in Hydraulics to denote the static pressure in a pipe, channel, or duct flow. It has the physical dimensions of length (hence the term “head”) and represents the flow-work per unit weight of fluid.

Priming. Most centrifugal pumps are not self-priming. In other words, the pump casing must be filled with liquid before the pump is started, or the pump will not be able to function. If the pump casing becomes filled with vapors or gases, the pump impeller becomes gas-bound and incapable of pumping.

Definition of saturation pressure. : the pressure of a vapor which is in equilibrium with its liquid (as steam with water); specifically : the maximum pressure possible by water vapor at a given temperature.

Overview. Cavitation is the formation of empty cavities in a liquid, followed by their immediate and sudden implosion. Cavitation is a common problem encountered in pumps and control valves; one that causes serious wear and tear and can reduce a component’s time-in-service dramatically.

Net Positive Suction Head 3% (NPSH3)– For rotodynamic pumps NPSH3 is defined as the value of NPSHR at which the first-stage total head drops by 3% due to cavitation.
