What is the plural of the insect fly?

Fly. Fly, (order Diptera), any of a large number of insects characterized by the use of only one pair of wings for flight and the reduction of the second pair of wings to knobs (called halteres) used for balance. The term fly is commonly used for almost any small flying insect.

The adult housefly can live up to one month in the wild. The fruit fly also lives for approximately 30 days after reaching adulthood. Flies survive longest in warmer temperatures and their ideal temperatures—between 75 and 80 degrees—are those found in most American homes.

Singular possessive of country is “country’s.” The noun remains in the singular form and “ ‘s “ is added to indicate possession. “Countries” is simply the plural form of “country,” So, if you are talking about more than one country, it would be “countries.”

In the meanings “refined, polite woman” and “woman of high social position” the noun lady is the parallel of gentleman. As forms of address, both nouns are used in the plural ( Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your cooperation ), but only lady occurs in the singular.

The average natural life span of fruit fly adults in optimal temperatures is 40 to 50 days. Female fruit flies are capable of mating and laying several batches of eggs in that time, allowing the fruit fly population in a home to multiply quickly. The life span of the fruit fly is heavily influenced by temperature.

In lots of insects with two pairs of wings, they flap together, not as opposites. In bees and butterflies, both pairs of wings are hooked together so they flap as one large wing surface. But flies move their two sets of appendages in opposite directions – and at incredibly high speeds.

Mayflies only live 16-24 hours but common house flies live 1-2 months or so. And gnats only live for a week or more, also there is many flies such as mayflies, dragonflies, damselflies, stoneflies, whiteflies, fireflies, alderflies, dobsonflies, snakeflies, sawflies, caddisflies, and scorpionflies.

Flies don’t offer the environment anything, they are part of the environment. But flies do serve some very good purposes. They eat decaying matter, and they lay their eggs in decaying matter so they will eat it when they hatch. Also flies are food for many other living things such as plants and animals and reptiles.

The eggs are white and are about 1.2 mm (0.05 in) in length, and they are deposited by the fly in a suitable place, usually dead and decaying organic matter, such as food waste, carrion, or faeces. Within a day, larvae (maggots) hatch from the eggs; they live and feed where they were laid.

The fly uses its antenna as its ear, which resonates in response to courtship songs generated by wing vibration. The researchers exposed a test group of flies to a loud, 120 decibel tone that lies in the center of a fruit fly’s range of sounds it can hear.

Because flies can’t chew (who knew?), they have to throw up enzymes onto their food, which dissolves the food so they may slurp it up. So in other words, if a fly lands on your burger and wants a bite, he or she will puke on it.

Fruit flies are the best-studied insects and are considered a model organism, so it goes to reason if they experience nociception other insects may also. Some activists tout these two studies as proof insects feel pain. But nociception is not pain. The current definition of pain requires an emotional response.

Adults usually live 15 to 25 days, but may live up to two months. Without food, they survive only about two to three days.

When you see flies rubbing their legs together, they are cleaning themselves. Flies rely on their compound eyes, antennae and the bristles on their bodies and legs to sense the world around them. They have to keep these sense organs clean so they can fly with precision to find food and mates and avoid predators.

Flies don’t live long enough for it to be much of a problem. During the night, as do many insects, they cling to the underside of leaves, etc, until dawn and the rising air temperature brings them up to full activity.

Their life lasting only for 24 hours. Mayflies also called as ‘one-day insects’ because of their shortest life span. There are 2500 different species of mayflies in the world. In fact, some members of mayfly family die within few hours.

There are several types of pest flies found in North American homes. Filth flies include the common house fly, drain flies and blow flies. Depending on species, they may seek moist, dark piles of trash, rotting carcasses or manure in which to lay their eggs.

Most spend the winter as adults in cracks and crannies and wake up in spring to lay their eggs on decaying matter. House flies delight in unhygienic places, and their maggots feed on rotting food and other human waste.
