Lung cancer in non-smokers can be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors. Workplace exposures to asbestos, diesel exhaust or certain other chemicals can also cause lung cancers in some people who don’t smoke.

Small Cell Lung Cancer – The overall 5-year survival rate for both stages of small cell lung cancer (limited stage plus extensive stage) is only about 6 percent. Without treatment, the average life expectancy for extensive disease is 2 to 4 months, and with treatment is 6 to 12 months.

Lung cancer can spread to nearly any region of the body, but the most common areas are the lymph nodes, liver, bones, brain, and adrenal glands. Let’s take a look at each of these areas separately. Most lung cancers first spread to lymph nodes in the chest near the tumor.

Almost all cases of SCLC are due to cigarette smoking. SCLC is very rare in people who have never smoked. SCLC is the most aggressive form of lung cancer. It usually starts in the breathing tubes (bronchi) in the center of the chest.

The five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 55 percent for cases detected when the disease is still localized (within the lungs). Metastatic lung cancer can be treated, and some patients do go into remission. Remission means no evidence of active disease. It doesn’t mean that they’re cured, it just means that we don’t have any active disease on diagnostic testing.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Signs and Symptoms

The stage of a cancer describes its size, position and whether it has spread. The number staging system, which can be used for small cell and non-small cell lung cancer divides cancer into four stages: Stage 1 – the cancer is still inside the lung (localised) and hasn’t spread to the lymph nodes.

That said, the median life expectancy for stage 3 non-small cell lung cancer (the time at which 50 percent of patients are alive and 50 percent have passed away) is around 15 months for stage 3 lung cancer.

Doctors give chemo in cycles, with a period of treatment (usually 1 to 3 days) followed by a rest period to allow the body time to recover. Some chemo drugs, though, are given every day. Chemo cycles generally last about 3 to 4 weeks. For advanced cancers, the initial chemo combination is often given for 4 to 6 cycles.

The treatment of cancer of unknown primary origin continues to evolve. [25, 26] The most common scenario is a patient with progressive, metastatic adenocarcinoma with multiple organ involvement. The treatment of this group of patients remains suboptimal.

When NSCLC has spread outside of the lungs, it can be difficult to treat successfully. The 5-year survival rate for stage IV NSCLC is around 1%. Each year, tens of thousands of people are cured of NSCLC in the United States. And, some patients with advanced lung cancer can live many years after diagnosis.
